Emma Anderson

Emma Anderson
CANDIDATE FOR VP Academic
Who am I?
Hi there! My name is Emma Anderson (pronouns she/they), and I am running in this by-election to be your next Vice President Academic (VPA). Please feel free to reach out anytime with questions, comments, or concerns by messaging eanderson48@nait.ca on Teams!
I am from a small city in Saskatchewan, ten hours away from Edmonton. I initially came here in 2018 to start my post-secondary journey. Some traits that make me a great fit for VPA include my attention to detail, hard working nature, friendly and welcoming demeanour, and my perseverance to complete any task I set my mind to.
What are my qualifications?
I have been in post-secondary school for 7 years so far. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in psychology and will soon have a Business Administration Diploma in human resource management. This extended experience in school means I am equipped with knowledge of post-secondary learning, which is an asset as VP Academic.
Additionally, I have been working at NAITSA’s Service Hub since I started at NAIT. My experience here has deepened my understanding of NAITSA and what issues students are facing. Additionally, this position ensures I know which services are offered to students, how to listen actively, and have hard conversations if needed. These skills are necessary when advocating for your academic rights here at NAIT, so remember to vote Emma Anderson as your first choice.
What are my goals?
If elected, my goals would be to do the following:
- Implement a low or no-cost textbook program
Textbooks are expensive and often a barrier to education for many aspiring students. Other schools in the city promote alternative access to textbooks, like free access at the school library or promoting the use of open educational resources (OER). I will work towards starting similar programs at NAIT to ensure all students have the tools they need to succeed without sacrificing the essentials. - Advocate for better trained instructors
Instructors set the tone to any class and unprepared instructors can greatly inhibit learning. Increasing the frequency of training for permanent instructors and ensuring every temporary instructor is adequately trained are goals I will work towards, which will create a more engaging learning environment. To ensure students get what they pay for with tuition, I will hold NAIT instructors accountable for their actions and to maintain a high level of instruction. - Ensure consistency between services
Throughout my time at NAITSA I have noticed inconsistencies between many services offered at NAIT. One example is incorrect information from the Student Service Centre regarding NAITSA fees, especially the health and dental and u-pass fees. Inconsistent information causes extra stress to students, which affects their ability to perform well in class. I will work with the various services on campus to find a way to ensure correct information is given to students.
Make your voice heard and vote Emma Anderson as your first choice for VP Academic at naitsa.simplyvoting.com from April 12th to 15th at 4:00pm.
